Sunthorn Phu was the early Rattanakosin period’s foremost poet, and Sunthorn Phu Day is held annually on June 24-27 to commemorate the date of his birth. With his poems widely acclaimed for their lyrical verse and pictorial language, Sunthorn Phu was listed as a person of international literary distinction by UNESCO in 1986. The best of his poems is the epic romance Phra Aphai Mani. Activities on the day include a procession featuring Sunthorn Phu’s literary works, competitions on poetry writing and painting scenes from Sunthorn Phu’s poetry, and etc.
